Startpage Privacy Protection browser extension blocks third-party tracking cookies

Startpage, a search engine that allows anyone to search online without collecting, tracking or targeting personal data, has unveiled the Startpage Privacy Protection browser extension.

Available now as a free download on Chrome and Firefox, the extension helps users browse the internet more securely, automatically blocking first-party and third-party trackers, while giving them more control over their browsing and search experience. .

According to research, 87% of the world’s most popular web domains engage in digital tracking. In fact, according to Startpage’s analysis of the top 15 websites in the United States, major news outlets CNN and Fox News had over 40 trackers or cookies on their home pages. The Startpage Privacy Protection browser extension blocks these trackers and protects users from invasive targeted advertising with easy-to-use features that give anyone greater control over their online privacy, including:

  • Sends “Global Privacy Control” signals: The extension sends global privacy control signals (Do-Not-Track) to sites visited with your privacy preferences.
  • “Data collection” blocks: The extension prohibits third-party sites from using special scripts to collect information about you.
  • Provides control over cookies: The extension completely prevents trackers from being placed on search activities by advertisers and third parties; or, unique to any other extension on the market, allows users to enable cookies from certain domains according to their preferences or needs.
  • Replaces pervasive social flaws: The extension replaces the default social media, video and music site tracking settings with “click to enable” options, encouraging safer social media practices and providing greater transparency.
  • “True Score” privacy ranking: The extension evaluates and displays a privacy rating from 1 to 5 based on each site’s privacy practices. While other extensions on the market have their own rating methods, Startpage is the only one that rates sites before blockers are applied to expose the site’s true privacy reputation.
  • Default start page: The extension sets the user’s default search engine to Startpage, ensuring that searches are private, not saved, sold, or used for profiling, but retain top results.

“From sensitive search queries like ‘how to get out of debt’ to social posts featuring your child’s face to e-commerce sites that track your holiday shopping habits, bits of personal data are recorded and sold every second,” said Robert EG Beens, founder of Startpage. “Tech companies, search engines, social platforms, data brokers and advertisers have for far too long profited from this data collection at the expense of consumers. With the Startpage Privacy Protection browser extension, we’re proud to deliver the Startpage promise beyond just searching, giving users an unparalleled layer of protection against all tracking and tagging with more control and transparency than never.

Startpage has been protecting users’ personal data through the most private search engine for 15 years, helping millions of users search the web daily safely without sacrificing results.

This announcement is the largest and most comprehensive feature launch Startpage has released since private browsing Anonymous View in 2018 and now, in addition to blocking trackers and cookies, sending privacy signals and disabling fingerprinting, the Startpage Privacy Protection extension is the only solution on the market that combines this level of privacy and control with search results (via private Google search results).

The Startpage Privacy Protection extension is available now and free for anyone to install on Chrome and Firefox.
