Marine Power Systems Appoints Black & Veatch to Engineering and Systems Coordination Role for Combined Floating Wind and Wave Energy Project

GUILDFORD, England, November 17, 2021– (BUSINESS WIRE) – Black & Veatch has been selected to help guide Marine Power Systems in coordinating the design of subsystems, systems engineering and certification of unique and flexible power generation equipment Marine Power Systems floating wind and wave generator.

Black & Veatch is an employee-owned global engineering, procurement, consulting and construction company with deep experience and a long history of innovation in sustainable infrastructure.

Working as an extension of the Marine Power Systems technical team, Black & Veatch will lead specific elements of the project, providing technical quality assurance and helping to identify and manage technical and program risks. The role also encompasses quality, health, safety and environmental management and oversight, as well as supporting Marine Power Systems’ large-scale technology certification process.

Marine Power Systems’ unique and patented platform technology offers the best cost in its class compared to its peers due to the significantly reduced system mass. In addition, its modular and flexible design enables optimal local content delivery through a decentralized logistics model. These benefits provide large-scale developers with maximum flexibility between reducing costs and increasing local economic benefits, while at the same time accelerating the deployment of large-scale farms.

The Wave Energy Converter has a unique wave energy capture mechanism – harnessing the uplift and surge energy of the wave directly and efficiently. Each energy absorber can capture more than one megawatt of power, and each device has multiple absorbers, which leads to a significant power output of several megawatts per machine.

Robbie Gibson, Black & Veatch Director for Renewable Energy in Europe commented: “A single system that simultaneously captures wave energy and wind power is a more coherent renewable ocean energy source, making maximum use of the rental area from an energy cost perspective. level and making intermittency less difficult. This project directly builds on our strengths and experience in delivering large marine energy and offshore wind projects. Our broader design portfolio encompasses many, many complex system configurations with multiple products and technologies.

Graham Foster, CTO at Marine Power Systems commented, “We continue to build our premier team here at Marine Power Systems. Our partners and suppliers are an integral part of this team and this latest appointment will play a crucial role in delivering a project and quality assurance. The team at Black & Veatch bring invaluable experience in floating wind and wave energy systems and marine structures, coupled with the ability to manage complex interfaces between them and oversee the path to technology certification. “

While offshore winds in shallow waters have been harnessed by fixed bottom wind turbines, wind and wave power in deep waters remains largely untapped and accounts for around 80% of the exploitable energy resources of our oceans.

Marine Power Systems has developed flexible floating platform technology which is the only solution of its kind that can be configured to harness wind and wave energy either as a combined solution or on its own in deep water. While the market for their technology is utility, grid-connected farms, other markets include the electrification of oil and gas rigs and the growing hydrogen economy.

Marine Power Systems is currently working on the deployment of a grid-connected megawatt-scale wind and wave device in northern Spain on the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP), as well as on the deployment of a pre-commercial scale network at the European Marine Energy Center. (EMEC), Orkney Islands.
