The ABCs of Pro AV: a complete list of audiovisual acronyms and their meanings


The professional audiovisual industry is full of technical jargon which admittedly makes it a bit difficult for foreigners to understand the sheer extent of the services offered there. That’s why we’ve created this simple reference guide to the most well-known audiovisual acronyms.

Audiovisual technical protocols

AVoIP – abbreviation of “AV over IP”, or the transfer of audiovisual data over a client’s IP network.

SDVoE – “software-defined video over Ethernet; »This is an AVoIP protocol that uses standard Ethernet switches.

HDCP – “Protection of high bandwidth digital content; »A form of copy protection (signal interference) that prevents audio and video content from being copied as it passes through cables or connections.

HDMI – “Multimedia interface in high definition;” an uncompressed digital connector providing an interface between 8-channel digital audio and HDTV standards.

HDBaseT – “high definition video, audio, power, home network, Ethernet, USB and cable control category”.

AVB – “Audio / video bridging”

LED – “light emitting diode;” a material that emits light when electricity passes through it.

OLED – “organic light-emitting diode; »A polymer or other organic substance used as a semiconductor in an LED

AVIXA – “Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association”, producer of InfoComm lounges worldwide, co-owner of Integrated Systems Europe and the international professional association representing the audiovisual industry.

AVUG – “AV user group”

NSCA – “National Association of Systems Contractors; »Non-profit association representing the commercial electronic systems industry and founder of programs such as IGNITE, Pivot to profit, etc. Its annual Business & Leadership conference brings together integration professionals for strategic presentations and networking.

SIA – “Security Industry Association” is a professional organization for security professionals.

USAV Group – Alliance for Physical Security (PSA – see below) is the world’s largest consortium of systems integrators, made up of the most advanced security and AV system integrators in North America. and service providers, and industry associations to provide a collaborative network of experts.

BICSI – “Building Industry Consulting Service International” tackles iinformation and communication technologies systemic education.
